The Department of Geosciences at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne currently has five faculty (and is actively seeking a sixth) who are responsible for teaching undergraduate geology, paleontology, and astronomy courses. The the department also has two emeritus professors active in research and teaching, a secretary and technician.
Students pursuing geology degrees are encouraged to join faculty in diverse and challenging research programs. Much of the research is in the field and many trips are organized by the faculty each year. These field trips give students the opportunity to exercise their classroom learning on how to identify and interpret geologic formations, fossils, and minerals.
As part of their training, students are given in-depth instruction on quantitative and qualitative analysis of geologic samples, using a variety of methods including polarizing microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), chemical analysis, and X-ray diffraction.
IPFW has offered undergraduate degrees in Geology since 1964.
