Requirements for the B.S. in Geology

To earn the B.S. with a major in geology, you must fulfill the requirements of IPFW and the school, complete the following geology core courses and the courses in one of the two options. Grades of C or better must be earned in all courses in geology and ancillary subject areas.

BS Core


One of the following:
Geol G103; or Geol G100 General Geology, Geol G210 Oceanography, Geog G107 Physical Systems of the Environment, or AST A100 The Solar System with Geol L100 (3 cr)
Geol G104 Earth Science: Evolution of the Earth (3 cr)
Geol G211 Introduction to Paleobiology (3 cr)
Geol G221 Introductory Mineralogy (3 cr)
Geol G222 Introduction to Petrology (3 cr)
Geol G319 Elemenatry Field Geology (2 cr)
Geol G323 Structural Geology (3 cr)
Geol G334 Principles of Sedimentology and Stratigraphy (3 cr)

Chem 115-116 General Chemistry (8 cr)
Stat or CS (see advisor) (3 cr)
Phys 220/201 and 221/202 General Physics I-II (8-10 cr)


Geology Option


This is the traditional option in geology. It will help you prepare for advanced studies in geology and for work as a professional geologist.

Geol G429 Field Geology in Rocky Mountains, Summer (7 cr)
MA 227-228 Calculus for Technology I-II (7 cr)
Additional Credits in 400-level geology courses (9 cr)
Additional Credits in either 300- or 400-level geology courses (3 cr)


Environmental Geology Option


This option will help prepare you for advanced studies in environmental geology and for work as a professional geologist in the areas of water supply, waste management, geological hazards, engineering geology, and teaching.

12 credits chosen from the following:
Geog G315 Environmental Conservation (3 cr)
Geol G300 Environmental and Urban Geology (3 cr)
Geol G336 Principles of Engineering Geology(3 cr) or,
Geol G413 Introduction to Geophysics (3 cr)
Geol G406 Introduction to Geochemistry (3 cr)
Geol G415 Geomorphology (3 cr)
Geol G423 Methods in Applied Geophysics (3 cr)
Geol G451 Principles of Hydrogeology (3 cr)
Additional credits in 300- or 400-level geology coruses (3 cr)
